There is a particular kind of longing that can live in the absence of a mother. Whether we have lost her to death, distance, circumstance, or the necessary boundaries of our own lives, there can remain a place in us that still reaches toward being gathered in, tended to, and carried. Motherlessness can leave us feeling strangely untethered in the world. We may have spent years being capable, caring for others, or even carrying our own mothers, only to discover that somewhere beneath all of that strength lives a much older desire to put our weight down and be held by something larger than ourselves.

The Motherless Wild is a ceremony for women who know this longing. We will gather on the land with what has been lost, what was never received, what remains unfinished, and what still lives within us. There is room for the mothers we loved and lost, the mothers we needed, the mothers we could not safely remain close to, and the mothers we may never have known. The wild knows something about belonging without asking us to explain where we came from. For an afternoon, we will let ourselves be daughters again and become curious about what it means to be carried by the earth beneath us, the women beside us, and whatever mystery we each understand to be larger than ourselves.

What we might explore

  • Embodied practices exploring support, weight, reaching, receiving, and the experience of being carried.
  • Time on the land to wander, listen, remember, grieve, or simply be with what is present.
  • Working with natural objects and symbolism to give shape to experiences that may be difficult to put into words.
  • Honoring what was received from our mothers alongside what was missing, complicated, or never ours to carry.
  • A simple ritual for laying something down, tending something that still aches, or acknowledging what remains.
  • Time in the company of other motherless daughters, with opportunities to share and be witnessed. Sharing is always optional.

As the afternoon moves toward dusk, we'll return to the circle together before gathering around the table at 5:00 for warm food, bread, and something sweet.

  • Rain or shine. December afternoons can become cool quickly as the sun begins to drop, so bring warm layers along with long pants and sturdy closed-toed shoes.
  • We'll be spending a significant part of our afternoon outdoors and walking into the surrounding landscape.
  • Space is intentionally limited. The exact address and arrival details will be shared after registration.

Your place is held once registration and payment are complete. Because we gather at a private residence, we'll then schedule a short conversation before the day, and I'll send the exact address and arrival details. If you don't see a time that works, call or email me and I'll make time for us to talk.

If you'd rather talk first, you're welcome to reach out.
