Somatic & Nervous System Work

Sometimes we understand our patterns long before our bodies stop living inside them.

Beginning where the body already is
“Getting diagnosed with ADHD explained so much, but it didn’t automatically teach me how to understand my nervous system. With this work, I have more awareness of what’s happening in me before I react, and I’m getting better at communicating what I need. I’m not trying to regulate myself perfectly anymore. I’m learning how to work with the nervous system I actually have. Overall, I am feeling more balance in my life. I love these tools! So simple, but so effective!"

The practice

How somatic & nervous system work works

You may know why you respond the way you do. You may have spent years in therapy, read the books, learned the language, and developed tremendous insight into yourself. And still, your body may brace, shut down, become overwhelmed, disconnect, or respond as though something from the past is happening now.

This is where working directly with the body and nervous system can offer something different.

My approach to trauma work begins with the understanding that the nervous system has been responding intelligently to the conditions it has encountered. Rather than trying to override those responses, we become curious about them. We pay attention to what your body does, what it anticipates, what helps it experience greater choice, and what allows it to become increasingly responsive to what is actually happening now.

What we do together

There is no single protocol that I use with everyone.

Our sessions may include nervous system education, somatic exploration, movement, breath, orienting, grounding and resourcing practices, TRE®, Neurogenic Yoga™, relational and attachment-based work, or other embodied practices.

We may work with activation and shutdown, boundaries, patterns of bracing or collapse, difficulty resting, relational responses, grief, transitions, or the experience of simply not feeling at home in your body.

The nervous system is always central, but it doesn't exist in isolation. Your relationships, environment, history, current circumstances, body, identity, and the conditions of your life all matter.

The goal isn't to create a life in which you are never activated or uncomfortable. It is to develop greater capacity, choice, and responsivity so that your nervous system has more ways to meet what life is asking of you.

For whom

Who is this work for?

This work may be helpful if you are:

  • Living with the effects of trauma or chronic stress
  • Experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, shutdown, or persistent hypervigilance
  • Feeling disconnected from your body
  • Finding that insight alone hasn't changed certain patterns
  • Moving through grief, loss, or significant transition
  • Working with attachment or relational patterns
  • Wanting greater capacity to experience emotion without becoming overwhelmed
  • Interested in developing a more trusting relationship with your body

You don't need to know what technique you need. We begin with what is happening and work from there.
