Neurogenic Yoga™

A body-led practice that meets the nervous system's own instinct to shake, soften, and let go.

"I came to Neurogenic Yoga carrying years of tension I didn't even know I was holding. The shaking felt strange at first, but over time it became a relief I could trust."

Neurogenic Yoga™ is a body-based practice designed to build nervous system resilience and support healing through gentle movement, breath practices, and the body's natural shaking response.

I co-created Neurogenic Yoga with Maria Alfaro in 2011 after years of exploring the relationship between yoga and the therapeutic tremoring mechanism used in TRE®. We saw the possibility of a practice that could prepare the body through movement while allowing the tremoring response to emerge within a broader embodied experience.

You do not need to be flexible, experienced in yoga, or particularly comfortable in your body to begin. Neurogenic Yoga isn't about performing postures correctly. The movement is there to support the body, not the other way around.

The practice

How Neurogenic Yoga Works

Our nervous system is constantly responding to the world around us, mobilizing energy when we need to act and settling when the demand has passed. Stress and trauma can disrupt this natural rhythm, leaving patterns of muscular tension, bracing, activation, or shutdown that persist even when the original threat is no longer present.

Neurogenic Yoga™ combines movement, breath, and yoga with the body's natural tremoring response. This involuntary shaking is an innate physiological mechanism seen across many mammalian species, including humans. In the wild, animals may shake or tremble during or after highly stressful or threatening experiences. Humans have this capacity too, although we often learn to suppress or interrupt it.

Rather than treating tremoring as something to control or stop, Neurogenic Yoga creates conditions in which this natural response can be explored intentionally, while maintaining awareness, choice, and the ability to slow or stop at any time.

The practice is designed to support the nervous system's capacity to move more flexibly between states of activation and settling, while increasing body awareness and reducing patterns of muscular tension.

What we do together

Private sessions give us the space to individualize the practice around your body, your nervous system, and what you are arriving with that day.

As we prepare the body for neurogenic tremoring, we may draw from yoga-inspired movement, breath, body-driven movement, neuromuscular reprogramming, and somatic practices. There is room to explore, follow impulse, and respond to what your body is communicating rather than moving through a set sequence.

From there, we move into the neurogenic tremoring practice, continuing to listen and respond to the body as the tremors unfold. The intention is not to make something happen. It is to become increasingly able to notice, respond to, and trust what your body is communicating.

For whom

Who is Neurogenic Yoga for?

Neurogenic Yoga is based on the fundamental idea that stress, tension and trauma are both psychological and physical. The body's natural tremoring response belongs to all of us, and once activated safely, it can serve as a lifelong tool for self-regulation and well-being. Because of this, everyone can benefit from Neurogenic Yoga.

For facilitators

Neurogenic Yoga & TRE dual certification.

An experiential training for those who wish to hold this work for others. Rooted in Dr. Berceli's method, the program is as much a personal practice as it is a curriculum — because the body of a facilitator is the room in which the work takes place.

Graduates are certified to teach Neurogenic Yoga in group settings and to facilitate TRE® one-to-one.
